- Oh gee... I can't let this one go by. I and several others (including
- Patrick Graybill of NTD fame, Dennis Cokely, William Stokoe, etc.) are
- fast at work on a project to produce a multimedia dictionary of ASL.
- It'll be a bilingual dictionary -- enter an English word and it'll
- return a (list of) ASL words, or you can also do an ASL-to-English
- search ("I saw a sign that looked like this ... tell me what it was,
- possible English translations, etc."). Not to mention definitions (how
- many so-called ASL dictionaries have them?) -- real definitions of the
- ASL, usage, regional variation, synonyms and antonyms, etc.
-
- The display of ASL signs will not be those old, static line drawings
- with noodles of arrows are over -- it'll be color "movies" of Patrick
- actually signing to you.
-
- And (finally to my follow-up point): all of this will run on a *color*
- notebook computer the size that Keith described. Yup! Carry an
- ASL-English dictionary around with you in your briefcase. The benefit
- of Pat Graybill's knowledge of ASL semantics and Dennis Cokely's of
- ASL-English translation at your fingertips.
-
- Yes, technology is grand!
