- I am sending the following for the benefit of other new DB2
- installations who are just starting...
-
- In response to Edith 's query from UCONNVM :-
-
- --How often do you backup the catalog and directory?
- ==We take weekly backup.
- --How long do you retain the backups?
- ==We retain the backup for 28 days.
- --Do you backup to tape, or to disk and then transfer to tape?
- ==We backup to tape directly.
- --How do you manage you tape (or disk) datasets -- do you use GDG's and
- catalog control in your tape management system?
- ==We use GDG's (cycle=4) and synchronize syscopy with ICF catalog from
- time to time using "MODIFY".
- --Do you backup everything in each database? In the original backup job
- done as part of the initial install of V2R3 (jobname DSNTIJIC), three
- tablespaces that are in my directory were not included in the backup.
- They are DSNDB01.DSNSCT02, DSNDB01.DSNSPT01, and DSNDB01.DSNSPT02.
- Does anyone know what these are and should they be backed up?
- ==Yes, we backup everything. We are in the process of migrating to V2R3.
- --Do you QUIESCE before and/or after your backups of the catalog and
- directory? This is recommended for any table or tablespace on page
- 6-107 of the Administration Guide (volume II).
- ==Yes, We follow the recommendation on above mentioned page.
- --Has anyone been to IBM's DB2 Advanced Recovery Workshop (U4074)?
- How was it?
- ==It is an excellent course. Lots of lab work and full participation.
- I 'l advise it for all sysadmins.
-
- Edith pointed out latter that DSNDB01.DSNSCT02, DSNDB01.DSNSPT01,
- and DSNDB01.DSNSPT02 are indexspaces.
- Indexes can be recovered (RECOVER INDEX...) as long as there is a
- good backup copy of data tablespace. So there is no need to back up
- indexes.
-
- "MODIFY" is a DB2 utility (documented in "DB2 command and utility
- manual). It deletes records of unwanted backup copies of tablespaces
- from "syscopy" catalog table and records of related log records from
- the "syslgrng" directory table. Since, we are using GDG for backup tapes
- , it is necessary that we clean up "syscopy" and "syslgrng" after a
- generation has been uncataloged from ICF catalog. From time to time
- we run this "MODIFY" utility in order to keep DB2 catalog and ICF catalog
- in synchronization.
