- AEJMC Call For Papers
- Interest Group on the Status of Persons with Disabilities
- Submitted by Clark Edwards <edwards@DUQ3.DUQ.EDU>
-
- The Interest Group on the Status of Persons with Disabilities will
- sponsor or co-sponsor eight different sessions during the four-day AEJMC
- convention in Kansas City, Aug 11-14, 1993. Four of the sessions will
- be devoted to presentation of research on media and disability--one of
- them, co-sponsored by the Advertising Division, will focus on research
- on the presentation of individuals with disabilities in advertising.
- The interest group will team up with the Media Management and Economics
- Division for a teaching session on disability issues in journalism
- education-- including educating future media managers about the impact
- the Americans with Disabilities Act will have on the newsroom.
-
- The Interest group's activities get underway the first day of the
- convention with a research panel at 11 a.m. Wednesday August 11. The
- business meeting is set that evening at 7:15, immediately following the
- keynote address and reception.
-
- The afternoon of the second day, Thursday August 12, will be busy.
- The joint research session on disability portrayal in advertising is at
- 1:30. Following a break for refreshments, we team up with the Visual
- Communication and Theory and Methodology Divisions for a PF&R
- (Professional Freedom and Responsibility) panel on pictorial stereotypes
- in the media. Another research paper session follows at 5:15. Friday's
- activities by the group will be a bit less hectic, consisting solely of
- the teaching session with Media Management and Economics at 10:30 a.m.
-
- The final day of the convention, Saturday August 14, starts of with
- a panel at 10 a.m. and a final research session at 12:45.
-
- Those who are considering submitting research papers to the Interest
- Group's paper competition should note that this year's schedule has more
- than triple the time allotted for presentation of research on media and
- disability than we had last year in Montreal. Papers should be sent to
- Ann Preston, Department of Communication, North Dakota State University,
- Fargo, ND 58105. And just a reminder that our joint research session
- with the Advertising Division means we'll be looking for research
- examining the presentation of disability in advertising.
-
- If you have an interest in the PF&R session with Visual
- Communication and Theory and Methodology, the contact person is Paul
- Lester, California State University, Fullerton, 717-449-5302; FAX
- 714-773-2209; Internet: LESTER@FULLERTON.EDU. The teaching session
- with Media Management and Economics is being coordinated by John S.
