  12. On December 30th I posted a message asking for libraries to share
  13. their fine policies. I reposted the message a week or so later to
  14. get additional responses. To date I have received 8 responses and
  15. have summarized them in this message for the list. Thanks to everyone
  16. who responded.

  18. I took the liberty in retaining the names and e-mail addresses of
  19. the respondents in case there is a need for followup to individual
  20. librarians. I've started to do a little personal analysis of the results
  21. and have found it interesting to list them in order by the cost
  22. of the fines. I certainly suspect there is a correlation between
  23. size and type of library and the size of fines but wonder if others
  24. of you see different patterns.

  26. In the next week or so I hope to put together a list for my own use that
  27. is more in the form of a table. This will also include the policies of
  28. some other libraries including Penn, Cornell, and Columbia. I decided
  29. not to include their policies in this message since I did not receive
  30. them from the list. If anyone wants a copy of the table, I will be glad
  31. to send it directly. I will also be happy to receive more responses
  32. to increase the coverage. Well, enough prologue, here are the results:

  137. Overdue fines for BOOKS: $.25 per day with a minimum charge of $1.00
  138.         and a maximum charge of $20.00 (three day grace)
  139. BOUND JOURNALS: $1.00 per day with a $30.00 maximum (no grace)
  140. UNBOUND JOURNALS: $1.00 per day with a $5.00 maximum (no grace)

  142. Reserve Fines: $.02 per minute, or $1.20 per hour, starting at
  143.         $1.00 the first minute the item is overdue during
  144.         regular session.  (No official grace but 10 minutes is
  145.         built into the fine)  No maximum fine.

  148.         minute or $2.40 per hour.  There is no maximum fine.

  150. We do not charge a person a fine in addition to a replacement charge
