- I'm coming into this discussion somewhat late, so maybe someone has mentioned
- the following remake:
- HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940) -- Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. Directed by Howard
- Hawks. Remake of THE FRONT PAGE (1931). Far superior -- in fact, a model of
- classical Hollywood filmmaking, IMHO. There was another remake, THE FRONT PAGE
- (1974, I think), with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon. Despite the cast, and the
- director (Billy Wilder), it didn't measure up to either of the first two
- versions. Part of the reason for HIS GIRL FRIDAY's superiority is the fact that
- the reporter, Hildy, was a woman instead of a man, and had been married to the
- editor (Cary Grant) -- which of course radically changed the relationship.
-
- While we're on the subject of remakes, has anyone mentioned SCENT OF A WOMAN,
- which seems to be a remake of a 1979 Italian film? I haven't seen the Italian
- film, but it is about a blind man. Is it a coincidence, or did Bo Goldman, the
- scriptwriter of the Pacino film, rip off the original? I say rip off because
- there is absolutely no mention of the original in the credits. Again, I am
- coming into this late, so maybe this has all been discussed.
-
- Pretty bad remakes include SCARFACE (DePalma), BREATHLESS (McBride -- although
- it did have some good moments), WILLIE AND PHIL (Mazursky remake of JULES AND
- JIM), FAREWELL MY LOVELY (Directed by Dick Richards -- with Robert Mitchum, a
- remake of MURDER MY SWEET), THE BIG SLEEP (also with Mitchum -- absolutely
- awful). HIGH SOCIETY, a musical remake of THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, was not
- horrendous, and it did have Crosby, Sinatra, Grace Kelly and Louis Armstrong,
- but it wasn't anywhere near the original in quality. Did anyone ever see BILLY
- JACK GOES TO WASHINGTON, a remake of MR. SMITH. . . . ? The very thought is
- sickening. BODY AND SOUL, a 1981 remake of the 1947 classic, was dreadful.
- Arthur Penn directed a film called DEAD OF WINTER, which was a remake (although
- as far as I recall, unacknowledged) of a nice little film called MY NAME IS
- JULIA ROSS - 1945. The remake was not up to the original, and was especially
- disappointing for an Arthur Penn film.
