- Subject: DGA/Oscar Nominations
- Lines: 51
-
- Considering the newly revealed DGA nominations and the Golden Globes, I wondered
- what everyone thought about Oscar nominations. Here are my ideas:
-
- Picture:
- The 3 locks are A Few Good Men, Howards End, and the Player. The other 2 slots
- are still up for grabs. Possible contenders:
-
- The Player has a stronger chance of being tapped now that it has the Golden
- Globe, and the actors will surely nominate it because a lot of them appeared in
- it. However, one has to wonder if Hollywood will want to reward the hand that
- bites it.
-
- Although Scent of A Woman got the Globe for Best Drama, I don't look for it to
- get nominated here. Common consensus seems to be that the film is too slowly
- paced and not "heavy" enough to warrant recognition.
- A River Runs Through It has, I think a stronger chance of being
- nominated because it has an Oscar-winning director at the helm and the film
- is both dramatically solid and visually enthralling--this can't be said for
- Scent, IMHO.
-
- Malcolm X-- Though I personally consider this last year's best film, I don't see
- a picture nomination because box office is not strong enough and I would imagine
- the Academy (read: establishment) is wary of the movie.
-
- Aladdin--This could slip in, since it is tremendously popular and innovative.
- However, I think Disney wants a nomination for Williams more than the film.
-
- The Crying Game--Could sneak in as a sleeper--Remember Chariots of Fire?
-
- For now I cast my lot with The Player and A River Runs Through It.
-
-
- Actor
- I think Pacino can just about call it his. Clint and Denzel will give him tough
- competiton, but Clint will more likely be named Best Director, and Denzel has
- won before. Pacino is enormously respected *and hasn't won yet*.
-
- Actress
- Emma Thompson--Any questions?
-
- Supporting Actor
- Hackman has the strongest chance here, but my real question is Will Robin
- Williams be nominated or given a special award a la Golden Globes?
-
- Actress/Supporting Actress
- Will Pfeiffer be nominated for Love Field or Batman Returns?
-
- Feel free to debate; I'm open to suggestions.
