- I watched 'Street Stories' last night and they had a piece on the current
- movement by US churches going to the Soviet Union to preach the Gospel. Keeping
- in mind the media bias toward sensationalism, I was still disturbed by what I
- saw. They 4 main groups on the program. 1)Krishnas 2)A group working in the
- subway areas 3)A pastor from a church in South Carolina working the streets and
- 4)The broadcast of Dr. Robert Schula's (spelling?) program on Soviet TV.
- The Krishnas were reaching the young adults and providing free meals. That
- is good to provide the meals but the idealologies is not in their best interest.
- The group in the subways showed a Christian woman telling an elderly Soviet
- woman through an interpreter "Jesus loves you" "Jesus loves you." The elderly
- woman said if this is so why am I poor, why don't you give me a rubel! I
- remember James 2:15,16 "Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and
- daily food. If one of you says to him, 'Go, I wish you well; keep warm and
- well fed,' but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?" (NIV).
- I know this specifically points out brothers and sisters in need, but I feel
- the principle applies to the lost as well. The pastor from South Carolina was
- attempting to evangelize on the street corners and invite people to the
- worship service he was having in the evenings. When they showed his sevices,
- he was bringing as elaborate a setup he could have to entertain the people who
- did show up. I didn't hear his sermon so I can't comment on it, all they
- showed was singing and a woman dancing across the stage. And finally they said
- that Robert Schuler's (spelling again?) program was being broadcast to about a
- million people in the Soviet Union. Broadcasting the American style of
- congregational worship, which makes Christian Americans look extremely wealthier
- than they were. These temporary outreaches are not the way to go, IMHO of
- course. There should be permanent missions sent with the goal of keeping the
- 'main thing, the main thing!' They should also be focusing on letting the
- soviets form their own form of worship, something they can relate to, not some
- glamourous weekly get together, which from what the program showed, is what
- these outreaches were giving them.
- I almost forgot this was a prayer request... Please remember those who go
- out to the Soviet Union to reach the lost there to keep the 'main thing, the
- main thing!' That Christ died for us, rose from the dead, and is sitting at
- the right hand of God! And that through Him we have eternal life, without
- Him we have eternal condemnation and separation from God.
