- Lines: 49
-
- Can anyone offer advice on how to manage Window based CDROMs on an
- Optinet network?
- Our LIN (Library information Network) offers access, for staff and
- users, to networked databases such as CDROMs, BIDs (Citation Indexes),
- Library Catalogues etc via a Microsoft Windows interface.
- For DOS based CDROMs such as Psyclit invoking the Psyclit icon will start a
- batch file. This will run the onet command to open the CDROM on the CD
- server, run the retrieval software from the file server close down the
- disc on the cd server and return to windows.
-
- For Window based CDROMs we can either:
-
- 1> Run a batch file which will open the CDROM,run windows, select the
- icon to run the retrieval software, exit windows and close the cdrom on
- the server. This approach precludes any other CDROMs being run.
-
- 2> Use the Optinet WONET program. While both DOS and Window CDROMs
- could be managed this way asking the user to use WONET first to open the
- disk then invoke the icon for the retrieval software and finally run the
- WONET again to close the CDROM is impractical. We also find that WONET
- frequently crashes. Maybe WONET in Optinet 2.x is more robust?
-
- My quest is to find an automatic process to handle the optinet
- operations and the retrieval software using a single icon. Can anyone help?
-
- Our setup is:
-
- NOVELL 3.11
- OPTINET 1.3
- WINDOWS 3.1
- MSDOS 5
-
- CD SERVER
- Research Machines 80286 PC with 4MB expanded memory linked to 32 Hitachi
- drives (1500/ 1700)
