- Hi Martha! Welcome to the list. I'm have a Religious Studies degree
- and became interested, for a time, in religious folklore. I have
- collections of folk religious beliefs. I'm on the lookout for a book
- I've heard about on Catholic Folk Beliefs and Tales (or some such),
- but can't find it anywhere. Have you heard of it? I also conducted
- an interesting survey on the Net a while back on religious folktales
- from different cultures around the world. Mostly North American
- responses, but a few international.

- I have a particular interest in the Bible as literature. One of my
- great delights is retelling popular Bible stories orally, as they must
- have been originally transmitted. The story of Tobit is great for
- this kind of retelling, it being an ancient folktale; Jonah also falls
- into this category, as does the Elija/Elisha cycle. (So does Genesis,
- but let's not start an argument about _that_ :-) ).

- I'm a Thomas Merton fan myself, and have studied a little Buddhist
- mysticism, but not much. I'm especially fond of Therese of Avila,
- Theresita of the Child Jesus, Juliana of Norwich, Catherine of Sienna,
- Bernard of Clairveaux, and Thomas Aquinas (yes, he was a mystic too,
- though many deny it). I'm guessing you're kinda sorta into Catholic
- mysticism too? By the by, what do you think of Robert Alter? Have
- you read his fairly recent new book, THE WORLD OF BIBLICAL LITERATURE?
