  24. Subject: Working Papers Clearinghouse

  26.      I would like to survey this group on whether there is an interest in
  27.      having a clearinghouse for Working Papers in Business (it is a
  28.      variation on what was recently sent regarding a clearinghouse at
  29.      Warwick for papers in economics).  It would have the following
  30.      functions:

  32.                 *  ACQUISITION/PRODUCTION - The Olin School of Business at
  33.      Washington University in St. Louis would collect working papers from
  34.      the major business schools and produce microfiche copies of them.  We
  35.      would also produce a cumulative index to the set (author, title,
  36.      institution and perhaps a keyword index).

  38.                 *  DISTRIBUTION/PROMOTION - The microfiche set would be
  39.      available for sale (the price would depend on the number of
  40.      institutions submitting working papers and the total number of
  41.      papers).  For this survey, assume that we would begin with about 30
  42.      institutions and over time expand to 50 or more with a price range of
  43.      $500-$900/year).  Photocopies of individual working papers would be
  44.      available to individuals and institutions (the price would be in the
  45.      $5 -$9/range per working paper).  Faculty and other researchers would
  46.      be made aware of the clearinghouse through publications such as
  47.      Abstracts of Working Papers in Economics published by Cambridge
  48.      University Press which may expand to include working papers in
  49.      business.  Other means such as news items and articles in library and
  50.      academic business publications would be utilized as well.  For this
  51.      survey, assume that all copyright clearances have been obtained.

  53.      You may send your responses directly to me and I will provide a
  54.      cumulated tally and feedback for readers of this list.  This survey
  55.      is directed to college and university business librarians since I
  56.      assume that most public and corporate business librarians have no
  57.      interest in this area.

  59.      You may respond at length or simply indicate one of the following:

  61.                 1)  Am interested in seeing such a clearinghouse developed
  62.                     and anticipate purchasing the microfiche set.
  63.  
  64.                 2)  The clearinghouse sounds like a good idea but I do not
  65.                     anticipate purchasing the microfiche set.  We may use
  66.                     the clearinghouse to acquire specific working papers.
  67.  
  68.                 3)  Do not feel the clearinghouse as described would be of
  69.                     value to our institution and do not anticipate making
  70.                     any use of it.

  72.      I would appreciate any other comments you have regarding the value of
  73.      such a clearinghouse.

  75.      A final note.  The idea of having working papers distributed on
  76.      microfiche and photocopies is based on practicality.  The ideal would
  77.      be to have the working papers online in full text but my feeling is
  78.      that it is not currently feasible.  Any modifications which you feel
  79.      would improve the concept I have described would be greatly
  80.      appreciated.
