  20. The book looks at "light and deep shades of green business."
  21. Light green stands for "a superficial, often profit-dictated,
  22. short-term response, while 'deep green' might stand for the more
  23. authentic attempt at dealing with the profound problem of
  24. humankind to find a genuinely sustainable way of inhabiting the
  25. planet into the long-term future"

  27. The essays in the first part of the book look at "light green"
  28. businesses, and show "quite emphatically," says the intro, "that
  29. most of what is commonly viewed to be green business is a hoax."

  31. It's the "deep green" part of the book that I enjoyed.  Two of
  32. the essays that particularly appealed to me (because of their
  33. novel slant) were:

  35. "Bursting the Bottle," which "translates a bottle of household
  36. spray cleaner into a bioregional, economic quiz."  A detailed,
  37. line-item, dollar-and-cent analysis of why it is better to
  38. eliminate packaging and buy products produced as close to you as
  39. possible.

  41. "Wildwood," which describes how an "old timer" works with nature
  42. on his tree-farm "eco-system."  The selectively logged tract of
  43. timber, 136 acres on Vancouver Island, "has been producing forest
  44. products since 1945, and will continue to do so indefinitely."
