- suzanne vega began the tour supporting her recently released _99.9 Fo_
- album last night at the chance in lovely poughkeepsie, ny. after a fracas
- with a bouncer at the entrance (which resulted in the ejection of a
- fellow concert goer before he even managed to get into the theatre), we
- all, sans john, settled down in a front row table just to the left of
- center stage.
-
- it was a fairly decent show. being the first gig of the tour, she was
- understandably rusty - this show was no technical masterpiece - but the
- errors were very minor and i doubt that most people noticed them. she's
- also come a long way from the reserved, shy stage personality that she
- used to harbor - gone is the waif of the first album and in its place
- has appeared a performer, comfortable on stage and capable of working
- the audience. song selection was primarily from the new album, with the
- a few must-plays like "marlene on the wall," "the queen and the soldier"
- and "neighborhood girls." "tom's diner" was a well-received encore - i
- suspect that that song will become her "werewolves of london," much to
- my regret. interestingly enough, i find that i wasn't too excited about
- hearing these oldest songs of hers and was disppaointed that she didn't
- play more from the past two albums ("men in a war" and "institution green"
- were the only appearances from _days of open hand_ - she could have
- picked better ones to play i think - "men in a war" is such a tedious
- song). i was also disappointed with the length as well - about 1 1/2
- hours including the encore and one extra song. she played well over 2
- hours the last time i saw her and played a much more satisfying setlist
- as well. still, i enjoyed what was there: the songs weren't perfect,
- but they came across well and the sound was excellent. i also liked the
- fact that the live renditions are almost never duplications of the
- studio recordings.
-
- overall: good, but not completely satisfying. the casual vega listener
- will enjoy this, but the vega fan will be left wanting.
