- Howdy,
- I'm a newbie and I'm want to get into jazz, but all I listen to is
- alternative music so does anybody have any good suggestions?

- What I really need are some suggestions as to where to go from here.
- See, I get interested in one artist (be it Hendrix back in high school,
- Pink Floyd from my early college days, Sun Ra from a couple years ago, or
- Miles Davis for the past year or two) and I go out and buy anything and
- everything they ever did, or at least everything from my favorite period
- in their career. As a result, this is what I know and like best, but it's
- about all I know:
-
- Trumpet: Miles, Lee Morgan, Wynton Marsalis, Wallace Roney, Don Cherry,
- Pops, Michael Ray, and Dizzy- (haven't gotten into Diz)
- Sax: Shorter, Trane, Roland Kirk, Eric Dolphy, Bird, Dexter Gordon,
- Ornette, Sonny Rollins- (also know, but haven't gotten into)
- Keys: Sun Ra, Herbie, Chick, Duke, Carla Bley, McCoy Tyner
- Guitar: Mclaughlan, Metheney, Frizzel
- Bass: Ron Carter, Mingus- (I guess, but haven't gotten into him either)
- Drums: Not big into drummers, at least not as a primary interest....
- Vocal: Not really into vocal jazz, sorry....
-
- Lord, that's about all my brain can think of at 8:30am. Where do I go from
- here? I want to expand my jazz interests, especially in the brass, winds,
- and keys areas. It would be simple to just ask Jeff Beer for a few top-10
- lists again, which I may well do. I'd just peel off those I already knew
- and go for the rest.
- How about it?
