  13.    I'm a newbie and I'm want to get into jazz, but all I listen to is
  14. alternative music so does anybody have any good suggestions?

  21.    What I really need are some suggestions as to where to go from here.
  22. See, I get interested in one artist (be it Hendrix back in high school,
  23. Pink Floyd from my early college days, Sun Ra from a couple years ago, or
  24. Miles Davis for the past year or two) and I go out and buy anything and
  25. everything they ever did, or at least everything from my favorite period
  26. in their career. As a result, this is what I know and like best, but it's
  27. about all I know:

  29. Trumpet: Miles, Lee Morgan, Wynton Marsalis, Wallace Roney, Don Cherry,
  30.          Pops, Michael Ray, and Dizzy- (haven't gotten into Diz)
  31. Sax:     Shorter, Trane, Roland Kirk, Eric Dolphy, Bird, Dexter Gordon,
  32.          Ornette, Sonny Rollins- (also know, but haven't gotten into)
  33. Keys:    Sun Ra, Herbie, Chick, Duke, Carla Bley, McCoy Tyner
  34. Guitar:  Mclaughlan, Metheney, Frizzel
  35. Bass:    Ron Carter, Mingus- (I guess, but haven't gotten into him either)
  36. Drums:   Not big into drummers, at least not as a primary interest....
  37. Vocal:   Not really into vocal jazz, sorry....

  39. Lord, that's about all my brain can think of at 8:30am. Where do I go from
  40. here? I want to expand my jazz interests, especially in the brass, winds,
  41. and keys areas. It would be simple to just ask Jeff Beer for a few top-10
  42. lists again, which I may well do. I'd just peel off those I already knew
  43. and go for the rest.
