- Actually, compressors do that for you, but that's cheating.
- What you could do, if you own a four track reel to reel with
- a separate record and playback heads is "preview" the tape
- with the preceding head, have it send the appropriate volume
- control to the output and when the real signal is read by the
- second head, it is appropriately adjusted. The preview
- is a few milliseconds, so if you use a "smart" compressor
- (you'll have to design one yourself), it'll take care of the
- volume control.
