- I forgot to mention that I picked up a great Coltrane CD over Christmas for
- only $7.99!!! It's a European import that might as well be a bootleg, of
- Trane with Dolphy and the usual rhythm section recorded live in November of
- 1961 in Coppenhagen. It features only 4 tunes, but *what* tunes they are!!!
- My Favorite Things with a stunning flute solo by Dolphy, Blue Train, Naima
- with Dolphy on bass clarinet, and Impressions. The sound quality is *very*
- good - only lacking in the high-end and nothing a little re-eq doesn't fix.
- I figured out the recording date from an extensive Eric Dolphy discography/
- biography I own, otherwise there was no clue where or even when this CD was
- recorded, or who was even on it (other then the obvious, Trane).
-
- I'll have to tape this one for you, Beer, if you're interested. And I got a
- cool ECC import of Art Blakey live in Japan in 1961 with Shorter and Lee
- Morgan on it. I'm usually not all that big into Blakey stuff, but those two
- horn players really make it for me.
-
- (Warning! Mindless Miles ramblings to begin at anytime....)
-
- The Miles recording I'm really looking for most of all is his 66 (or 67)
- concert with Gil Evans at Berkey. I hear it's in the vaults, and I'm pretty
- sure that it's never been released, even through unofficial channels. I'd
- pay a mint to hear what he did with Gil in 66. Other than that, the only
- thing I could really go for is more alternate takes of Nefertiti, like the
- slow take of Pinnochio. I'd kill for the master tapes of Miles' studio work
- in 1967. We see a few masterpieces in the years prior (Footprints, Prince
- Of Darkness, etc...) but for me (as I've said all to often, I sure) Miles'
- single greatest complete album (other than perhaps Kind Of Blue) is (you
- guessed it) Nefertiti. That whole thing is strong from second one till the
- final fadeout. For me, each cut off that album is among his very best. And
- I'd kill for live versions of any of those tunes. I hold high hopes that
- I'll at least find mention of some live Nefertiti stuff in the huge Miles
- discography I mentioned in my last post....
-
- Any word on the Miles Tibute band release that was mentioned quite a bit in
- that one Downbeat article called Miles Lives!
-
- And Jeff, what do you think of Seth Air? (I'm assuming you've heard it. I
- haven't as yet, but hope to soon rectify that situation.)
-
- I should shut up now and study for my Medieval Music midterm. Now was that
- Leonin or Perotin? ;-)
