- The thing about Schittke's statement that what he has been talking
- about is as old as the sun. Bartok, Stravinsky, Ives have all drawn on
- folk source material. Mahler too, I believe. You probably could go
- further back, but my music history is not so hot there. Duke Ellington would
- have his Far East Suites, Latin America Suites, Afro Eurasian Eclipse
- and the Nutcracker. Duke is doing quite a bit different today. He is
- not trying to mimic a style, he just would dig the sound on one of his
- tours, and let the impressions come out in his writing.
- Gershwin had his folk, pop and classical influences, and Arnold Schoenberg
- raved about Gershwin's
- accomplishments.

- They are doing it today, but it has its own style. They call it
- postmodern. Schnittke and Zorn are both from the same era in this
- regard. BTW, I am told that Zorn has the biggest record collection in
- the universe. No way you could stump him in a blindfold test.
