- Bloomdo, thanks for the explication of Grace Slick's family circumstances (even
- when I look things up in BOOKS I still make ludicrous mistakes...). So is Jeff
- Darby her OTHER husband? So am I to take it that Grace left for the Airplane
- and Darby didn't go with her? (or did he go too?) course it's all medieval
- history. But anyway, I played "How It Was" which started out pretty lame but
- you could hear them get warmed up, and when I got to the final tune (called
- "Father"--a very bizarre title in my opinion... i.e. in relation to the music),
- I couldn't STAND it it was so great. I kept rewinding the tape so I could play
- that last one again and again and again. It's a straight instrumental, starts
- out with sax (that could ALMOST be clarinet but I guess it isn't and that
- could ALMOST be Klezmer but I guess it isn't) with a nice wild solo,
- then some percussive thuds and then we're in OUTER-WHAMMO-SPACE with the most
- !@# guitar solo I've heard in a WHILE. Maybe some of y'all would just sniff at
- it, who knows, but I absolutely went into a tailspin. If I were Robert Johnson
- I'd mosey out to the crossroads and sell my soul to play like that. THAT is
- exactly how I want to play... that solo just crawls out onto a limb and then
- it's off in some other dimension. Could someone else out there who owns "How
- It Was" take a listen and tell me what YOU think. I haven't been so blitzed by
- anything in a while (well, at least since yesterday when I fell out over
- "Gabriel's Nightmare"...) Yesterday was quite a day all in all, because I ALSO
- played _Transmutation_. IncrediBOBBLE... Will have to work on a worthy review
- but the one thing I truly adored... well, among many things... was that the
- fabulous Buckethead was into the thing for ITself and not for HIMself, i.e. he
- is "totally awesome" as we cool beans say around here but he didn't dominate
- and he knew when to lay back, which is a rare thing for a guitarist that hot.
-
- I liked Bloomdidodoodoo's comment (which I won't be able to reproduce very
- well, I fear) that psychedelic music at its best reached out in all directions
- and used everything it could, followed all paths... well, how DID you say that
- anyway? But I liked the comment because just yesterday I was wondering, "how
- exactly would I define 'psychedelic'" because I seem to be so obsessed with the
- stuff recently, yet ... what does the word MEAN (when it comes to music)?
- and I think you just did it. Even _Transmutation_ seemed to have a pinch of
- that psychedelic seasoning... which must mean wandering off into all realms.
- Yet Sharrock does that too, but I wouldn't call HIM psychedelic. Oh well, nuff
- already with these definitions. I refused to take the "take=home exam" because
- it contained the filthy word "synthesis." BOOLLSHEET.
-
- P.S. Bloomdingdong, are you sure that Prof. Toth at Brown isn't Lazlo?
