- Rossy _Island of Ghosts_ (Real World). Great album to take you away
- for an hour to another culture (Madagascar). Put together with sounds
- of lemurs and the regional birds, it is a pleasant acoustic diversion.
-
- (had to say sumpthin that no one else would pick...!)
-
- Peter Gabriel _So_
- Sting _Dream of the Blue Turtles_
-
- These IMHO define the upper eschelons of pop. Both are full
- of diversity and creative textures and melodies. Both tap into
- the world music scene in a creative manner.
-
- U2 _The Joshua Tree_
-
- Okay, so I'm now stretching a bit, but this is a neat album for me,
- because of the way the music was recorded and the way the "microcosm"
- of the Joshua Tree was depicted through song and pictures. There is
- an accompanying book for the album, which included lyrics and various
- things from the period when the album came out. The photos were
- high contrast and grainy, like the album cover, and like the music.
- It made the music come out a little better in mind--atmosphere, y'know?
- And it helped that I visited Joshua Tree National Monument during
- that summer. The music just fit perfectly. I guess you had to be there...
- Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno did a great job in recording this album.
- If anything, it is a neat concept/ambience album.
- Rattle and Hum sucked in comparison, IMHO.
-
- If we can include 1970s stuff, I must say that Pink Floyd
- had put out some of the best concept albums (_Dark Side of the Moon_--great
- theme of things that drive you mad, _The Wall_--Waters' masterpiece).
-
- As far as albums go these days, I don't think artists are into thinking
- long and deep anymore (the songs, the songs!).
- Not too many folks can do the "Crimson" thing or the "Lamb Lies Down"
- thing anymore. Many artists are going for the "short and quick" tunes--
- catchy and just-right for short attention spanned listeners of today.
- Anything longer is considered an extended mix. Ahh, the mentality of
- today's music. I'd better quit before I start going on again about
- modern music. Bah.
-
- Mike.
