- Um, I think Tim was just implying that you could set your input level on
- your tape deck and forget it when recording CDs, but as I pointed out, this
- isn't quite true since different engineers will tend to give themselves more
- or less headroom on the recording level, with consequentially varying max
- outputs. DAT *will* give you a perfect copy (assuming correct bits are read
- from the CD, which is not necessarily a given) if it's hooked up to the
- digital output of a CD player, but since most folks have an analog preamp or
- receiver sitting between CD & DAT (well, those who are lucky or foolish enough
- to have a DAT deck - I noticed a portable Casio for just over $500 mailorder...
- <innocent whistling> :-), an analog signal may be more commonly used as input
- to DAT decks. If I had the money, I'd probably pick up the M&S MCC-1 D/A
- converter/digital preamp, but I still wouldn't get a DAT deck :-)
-
- FWIW, I have no plans to even consider either of the new digital formats,
- MiniDisc or DCC. MD is pretty cool, but I'd rather buy more CDs!
