- This is exactly the situation I was in a month ago, and exactly what
- I tried, which didn't work. I still haven't figured out what
- went wrong, but apparently the system did not find the tape drive I
- was trying to use. It defaulted back to the hard disk, so it tried to
- backup the hard disk over itself, wiping out /usr. Since the system
- was preloaded and this was the first backup, I had to order the tape
- from IBM so that I could reload. It took 2 weeks to get the tape.
- If there is a tape drive you can borrow, that's what I would recommend
- for now.
- In order to make a bootable backup tape, you should run
- smit startup and execute the backup option from there. This only
- works from a tape drive that is directly attached to the system. If
- you ever need to reboot from your backup tape, the tape drive will
- need to be directly attached. Also, be sure you have made your
- BOSBOOT diskettes.
- If anyone knows of a way to do this without having the tape drive
- directly attached, I am very interested in hearing about it. We are
- considering ordering a tape drive because of this situation.
