- When most MOTORISTS actually start *stopping* at ... stop signs --
- a full, no-motion stop -- then we can worry about how to make this more
- convenient for them.
-
- I take it you're a motorist who stops at stop signs and is always
- courteous to cyclists and pedestrians. Let me tell you something about
- typical motorists' habits: For about 6 years, I had an office with a
- clear view of the Foothill Blvd/Hillview Ave./Miranda St. intersection
- in Palo Alto. Less than 5 per cent (I ACUTALLY counted them for some
- time!) of motorists crossing the Foothill/Miranda offramp intersection
- actually stopped at the stop signs at Miranda. Most didn't even SLOW
- DOWN to cycling velocities (10 MPH). Motorists frequently ignored red
- lights (I typically saw several per day).

-
- IMHO ANYONE who believes that motorists are more law-abiding than
- cyclists/pedestrians hasn't taken an objective look at the behavior of
- real people on the streets. I hate to think how often I've been run off
- the road by a road warrier with his middle finger sticking out, in a
- hurry to make a right turn or unwilling to make the effort to pass me
- when I'm riding a bicycle in the slow lane.
-
- IMHO ANYONE who believes that motorists deserve more respect than
- cyclists/pedestrians or that they deserve more convenience or govenment
- resources (read "tax money") just because they own and operate private
- automobiles has his head screwed on backwards. In too many respects,
- motorists already get a free ride from the rest of us.
-
- As a cyclist (and motorist!) who obeys traffic laws, I'm frankly pissed
- off that Mr. Klorese thinks I have to convert cyclists to perfect
- compliance with laws which were written to disadvantage them before
- he'll even WORRY about my safety and convenence.
-
- (* flame off! *)
-
- Let's try to be sane about this issue: If govenrnment is going to
- spend money to make motoring more conveneient, let's at least bring
- cyclists up to a comparable level of convenience and safety. Marking
- trip wires, and keeping them calibrated so that a bicyle can trip
- them would be the MINIMUM! Special lights for cyclists or laws which
- permit cyclists to safely cross the street (e.g. at T-intersections)
- against the light can't cost very much compared to what 5-lane freeways
- cost to build.
-
- To motorists who bellyache about benefits for cyclists: Give us a safe,
- decent network of bike paths; keep your cars off them, and we'll keep
- our bikes off the freeway!
