- "Babes & Dudes" sounds like an accounting firm -- Ashley Babes and
- Johnathan Dudes the senior partners...
-
- >Well, Bruce, don't worry. The Shakespeareans are out here (there). My
-
- Thank god... I know they are out there -- a lot of my friends are
- Shakespearean fiends. However, in this group, after following it for about -
- err... 5 months? [Ohmigosh. 5 months? I have been here too long! -- and in the
- immortal words of General James Stockdale, "Why am I here?" ... (by the way, I
- shook his hands at my company xmas party in 1990 -- I have the photos to prove
- it). Anyways...] I havent seen much allusions and puns in the literary genre.
- let me try to remember:
-
- 1) somebody posting from berkeley mentioned about James Joyce once and
- his wife Nora, in the "star gazing" thread. . which produced a neat followup
- from somebody who recommended the video "james joyce's woman." and a call to
- read Joyce...
-
- 2) Your "culture elite" quiz -- that was great, by the way! We had
- quite a bit of fun with that one!
-
- 3) A person posted from a "warehouse" in east bay, writing about being
- alone and wanting to have that human contact, which is a follow up to a topic
- that Desiree started, about "being single and being alone". I would like to
- read more of his writing, because it's gut wrenching and -- as somebody else
- mentioned -- kind of has the "william s. burroughs" flavor to it. It does
- sound "beat." (So who ever you are, thanks for the posting. Hope to read more
- of that!). However, that thread quickly went into the flame pit so it was
- kind of disappointing.
-
- 4) Somebody from HP (I think it's Howard that runs the anatomically
- Korrect BBS) that punned on "Farewell to arms" -- to which I followed with
- "For whom the bell tolls" ... but that didnt go too far.
-
- 5) The puns around "Canonist" thread and my unwillingness to read
- anything that's not yet canonized. Finally Stef Jones followed with a reply to
- me about "WCW (william carlos williams) and TSE (t.s.eliot)" -- two great
- poets of our modern age. That was cool. (thanks stef!)
-
- 5) And this current discussion around, "Mortal Coil"
-
- That's about all I can remember as far as people imbedding literary
- references and allusions in their msgs is concerned... And that's in a span
- of 5 months...
-
- >brother and I used to pun around with the "coil" used in automotive ignitions.

- ,
- >you'd get a killer shock. Hence, the "mortal coil". And didn't Lewis Carroll

- >as a hobby?
- >
- Hmmm. I like that "fainting in coils" pun. There is a music group
- from England (recording on the 4AD label) that's called "Mortal Coil." I still
- think the a semi-cute, semi-stupid literary pick-up line,
-
- "Hey, wanna check out my mortal coil?"
- "Ohh -- Shuffle off!"
-
- is alright ;-)
-
- >And we grew up in Louisiana! Stifle those stereotypes about ignorant red-
- >necks! We wuz intellectual rednecks!

- I think the Bard's stuff is totally cool. It's timeless, and universal.
- English is not my first language -- I didnt speak the language til like 13
- years ago. But I took a liking to the Bard's work right away... Just goes to
- show that good writing transcends culture and geography... As for ignorant
- red necks -- hey. there are cowboys who write boootiful poetry...
-
- Speaking of Louisiana -- I am going to Nawlins for Mardi Gras! I
- will be hanging out at Cafe du Monde for a week -- I have never been there,
- so it's sorta "undiscovered country" for me, from whose borne I may never
- return if I find my self infactuated with the place!
-
- >Well, now that I've shuffled off from the original theme of this thread (ain't
- >that a novelty on this newsgroup). But I have your attention, at least.
- >"Speakest thou, Caesar is turned to hear!"
-
- Hmmm. now that we have steered this thread to some useless direction,
- I am pretty sure those with a "lean and hungry look" amongst us will try to
- flame us and wrestle the thread back from the hands of Mighty Caesar...
- [What shall we say then when that happens? "Et tu, Brutus?"] (really, the
- last words of Caesar were, "Ow! Ow! Quitit quitit! Ow! Cant we all get along?")
- .
- :-)
-

- I just hope to read more messages in this group that have a certain
- artistic glaze ... so that I can pun around them ;-)
