- My humble opinion is that the South Bay is hurtin' real good for a good
- brewpub. The Tied House is OK, rather average beer, not totally inspired,
- and average food at best. The one in Mtn View draws a pretty good-sized
- crowd most evenings. They also are in San Jose and Alameda. Tied House
- has between 6 and 8 types of beer to choose from. Stay away from their
- stout because it is not. Probably their double wheat is their best, or
- their amber ale.
-
- Gordon Biersch in downtown San Jose and in Palo Alto (and in S.F.) have better
- food than TH, the singles scene at the PA locn is more happening than the
- SJ location for sure. The beer, all 3 kinds usually only, is kind of boring,
- but if you're into bland German style beer than what the hell. What the
- South Bay needs is a Good Ale House.
-
- (and rumors be known, Benchmark Brewpub, in Sunnyvale (Murphy's Square), is
- going to be an ale house when they finally open, hopefully April or May)
-
- Winchester Brewpub in San Jose needs a lot of improvement for their
- beers to be palatable. It's also kind of a sports bar too. Brewpub on the
- Green in Fremont has decent beer and is most definitely a sports bar.
- Their ESB and porter is pretty good, food is mostly fried stuff though.
-
- The best brewpub in the South Bay right now could well be Los Gatos Brewing.
- They usually have four beers fresh on tap, right now they have two German
- style lagers, a German dunkel, and kind of a British nut brown ale. This
- pub is more "upscale" that any brewpub I have been to, more so than San Jose's
- Gordon Biersch, and draws more of a yuppie, frat style crowd. Their food
- is pretty good, but not really all that great of a place for meeting singles,
- the food is emphasized more than the brewpub atmosphere. Los Gatos is new,
- opened last year, Sept. I think.
-
- Best brewpubs in Bay Area? (including Santa Cruz, I am stretching, but not
- really since Santa Cruz is closer to Sunnyvale than Richmond or Berkeley)
- are Santa Cruz brewpub on Front St. and Seabright Brewpub in Santa Cruz.
- Excellent food, excellent ales, excellent.
-
- Look to San Francisco for more great brewpub excellence: Twenty Tank on 11th
- St. and San Francisco Brewpub on Columbus. Average food, great beer.
-
- Oakland has the wonderful Pacific Coast brewpub. Good food, great beer,
- they also have other microbrews there, especially the four star
- Anderson Valley oatmeal stout and A.V. centennial ale!
-
- I could go on and on a lot more but that's all for now. There are other
- good (and bad) 'pubs worth mentioning in a future post.
