- Here is my understanding of the situation, which goes back quite a
- ways. Perhaps someone like Erik Fair or Chuq von Rospach will chime
- in with corrections, but I'd guess they're tired from rehashing this
- the N'th time around...
-
- Supposedly, ba.market (and its successors, the ba.market.* groups)
- replaced ba.forsale and ba.wanted. However, this was never a unanimous
- decision, and some sites never bought in to ba.market.* scheme, and
- stuck with the forsale/wanted duplet.
-
- Other sites dutifully rmgroup'd ba.forsale and ba.wanted. Rather than
- simply deep-six ba.wanted and ba.forsale articles, some of these sites
- decided to alias these articles to ba.market, and later, ba.market.misc.
- So, even if someone posts to ba.wanted, chances are it will be seen in
- ba.market.misc. If you in fact see an article in the "obsolete"
- groups, Lady Luck has smiled on you.
-
- To muddy the waters further, there are a few sites (including
- gossip.pyramid.com) which carry all of the old and new groups:
- the first generation ba.{forsale,wanted},
- the second generation ba.market, and
- the current generation ba.market.{computers,housing,misc,vehicles}.
- Note, the most current ba checkgroups I have in hand, from 2/92,
- lists only the current generation. Also, I haven't administered
- netnews in 5 years...
-
- Since this is a Religious Issue, I doubt everyone will ever be happy.
- I believe carrying the ba.market.* groups is the most widely accepted
- convention, so I suggest using those groups. If your site doesn't have
- them, you may be out of luck.
