- I'm really confused about this regulator business. When I first started
- riding my R100GS, the batteries died about once a week. As I was paying
- for the official BMW battery charger, (warranty worries) I asked the
- local dealer (Schleicher in Oakland) whazzup? I was told that the
- high output reg. was for around town, and the low output was for trips.
- Watch out for the high-output on trips, said the guy, because it'll
- overcharge the battery.
-
- I talked to another R100 owner, who said that *she* had no problem
- with battery charging, and she had the low-output job.
-
- I heard, sometime later, I forgot where, that the bike likes to be
- cruised at around 3500 rpm. I don't know if this is true, but I thought
- it would boost the alternator's output, as well as give me a bit more power
- if I should suddenly need it. I used to cruise at about
- 3 krpm. Tried 3500. No more dead batteries.
-
- So now the batteries stay charged... but hell--why doesn't BMW equip the
- bike with a regulator that knows when to have high output, and when
- to have low output... Isn't that what a regulator's for, anyway?
