- Ok, we know the right thing to do is dismantle the engine and get
- a new selector shaft and shift lever ... and we don't want to do that
- (perfectly reasonable for an old bike, really).
-
- Pull the shift lever. Put the sucker into a vise and drill/tap it for
- an 8mm bolt (might as well stay metric, right?) with a drill press and
- a very hard drill bit right through the part that used to go onto
- the splines. Buy a nice 8mm bolt.
-
- Now match that up with the shift shaft so you know where it's
- gonna line up. Take a file and file a flat spot right across where
- there used to be splines at that point. Slide the shifter on,
- tighten the clamp bolt until it's almost all squoze down, then tighten
- your new bolt down tight, now tighten the clamp bolt all the way.
-
- Lockwire (or locktight) and you're done. Works really well.
