  23.     I've been wrestling with winter gloves for some time now.  I have a pair
  24. of GorTex gloves with Thinsulate lining, and they even come with some rain
  25. mittens inside the guantlet, but I haven't used them for some time.  The
  26. reasons:

  28.         o  They're very bulky.
  29.         o  The only leather is fairly cheap stuff in the palms.
  30.         o  The rain mittens are not waterproof.
  31.  
  32.     I found an interesting compromise that's worked very well so far.  About
  33. two weeks ago I went to Orchard Supply and got some extra-large rubber
  34. gloves intented for use when staining, or working with other nasty goop.
  35. The rubber is sort of a thick grey latex (no liner, unfortunately, but it
  36. goes over my leather gloves fairly easily).  The salient points:
  37.  
  38.         o  Slips over "real" leather gloves, so I feel better protected.
  39.         o  Only $5 for the pair.
  40.         o  Completely waterproof.
  41.         o  Completely windproof, so I haven't missed the total lack of
  42.            insulation (like it really gets cold here anyway).
  43.         o  Because of the above point, the combination is not bulky.
  44.         o  Can be folded small enough to carry with me in one of the
  45.            pockets on my Aerostich suit.

  47.     Note that I'm not talking about the spent-nuclear-fuel type gloves - the
  48. glossy black ones with liner and a fairly stiff material.  These are simply
  49. thick latex gloves.  I had gone to Home Depot before this but could only
  50. find the stiff gloves (not good for carrying around on me, and stiff
  51. besides) or the gee-your-hands-look-marvelous dishwashing type gloves (which
  52. I couldn't find large enough to slip over leather gloves anyway).

  54.     I've been using this combination every day for the last two weeks (I
  55. have no cage) and in all the rain, and am very happy with this combination.
