- | I bought the Difi Gortex gloves back in December, and yesterday was
- | the first time I rode in the rain with it. While my hand were warm
- | when I was riding, and it felt perfectly dry,...
- | ... this morning, when I grabbed my gloves, it was still soaking
- | wet (I had left it out in my room) and when I put my hand inside,
- | it was a bit moist, and for sure not dry.
-
- I've been wrestling with winter gloves for some time now. I have a pair
- of GorTex gloves with Thinsulate lining, and they even come with some rain
- mittens inside the guantlet, but I haven't used them for some time. The
- reasons:
-
- o They're very bulky.
- o The only leather is fairly cheap stuff in the palms.
- o The rain mittens are not waterproof.
-
- I found an interesting compromise that's worked very well so far. About
- two weeks ago I went to Orchard Supply and got some extra-large rubber
- gloves intented for use when staining, or working with other nasty goop.
- The rubber is sort of a thick grey latex (no liner, unfortunately, but it
- goes over my leather gloves fairly easily). The salient points:
-
- o Slips over "real" leather gloves, so I feel better protected.
- o Only $5 for the pair.
- o Completely waterproof.
- o Completely windproof, so I haven't missed the total lack of
- insulation (like it really gets cold here anyway).
- o Because of the above point, the combination is not bulky.
- o Can be folded small enough to carry with me in one of the
- pockets on my Aerostich suit.
-
- Note that I'm not talking about the spent-nuclear-fuel type gloves - the
- glossy black ones with liner and a fairly stiff material. These are simply
- thick latex gloves. I had gone to Home Depot before this but could only
- find the stiff gloves (not good for carrying around on me, and stiff
- besides) or the gee-your-hands-look-marvelous dishwashing type gloves (which
- I couldn't find large enough to slip over leather gloves anyway).
-
- I've been using this combination every day for the last two weeks (I
- have no cage) and in all the rain, and am very happy with this combination.
