- This is my personal opinion and may not have any bearing on the above
- WangDAT BUT I have had a bad experience with my used WangDAT drive.
-
- I bought a used WangDAT last spring in a SCSI cabinet from a usenettter.
- The seller claimed that it was only a year old, and was used slightly (the
- proverbial little old lady story). So, I bought the drive and it worked
- fine for a couple of months. I have a Q700 with a 160M drive, so it wasn't
- used much.
-
- Then one day, the drive wouldn't eject the tape. I took it to a local
- computer repair store. Tehy were able to get the tape out, but it was mangled
- beyond use. They also said that the DAT drive was beyond their repair.
- They called the WANGDAT factory who said that based upon the serial
- number of the DAT mechanism, my DAT drive was one of the original
- drive mechanisms they sold. So much for it being a recent drive.
- Also, WangDAT wanted over $500 for a factory refurbished drive. So,
- I sent my ancient drive into WangDAT and they replaced it with a brand
- NEW DAT drive for the $500.
-
- So, my advice is to get the serial number of the WangDAT drive mechanism
- and call WangDAT to find out the history of that drive.
-
- The latest price in MacWeek for a BRAND NEW WangDAT drive, in a scsi
- cabinet with Mac SW, is less then $1300. So $900 for a bare drive
- of unknown history, may not be such a great deal.
-
- But as I stated, this is just my personal opinion. I have no way
- of knowiung anything about the specific DAT drive being offered
- for sale.
-
- Good luck!!
