- I'm afraid I have to agree - there's been another slide on hwy 1 in the
- Big Sur area, I Believe, & due to all the landslides and flooding that
- are going on right now in Monterey County, CALTRANS doesn't know when
- its going to be reopened - so travel on Hwy 1 is a day-to-day thing
- right now

- and the best thing is right now there's not much tourist trade going
- on, and, when its not raining its one of the most beautiful times
- to spend at the ocean (I think that's why I enjoy living by it so much)
- you can go out and walk for miles along the beach - its great!!!

- you know, with hwy 1 having problems, you could consider alternate
- plans - drive down hwy 1, stop at Moss Landing (Moss Landing Oyster Bar,
- lots of antique shops - just before it is Baja pottery - then continue on
- down to the Monterey area and stay for a day or two and visit the wharf,
- cannery row, the aquarium, then on to Pacific Grove & Carmel for sightseeing
- (both Monterey & Carmel have beautiful missions & historic places to see)
- and beach walking - if the roads good then continue on to Big Sur and
- San Simeon (due to the rains, I've heard there's problems around some of
- the big homes in San Simeon) - if the roads aren't open, swing over to
- hwy 101 and see some of the missions along the way, backtrack to San Juan
- Bautista & Santa Cruz, or continue on to San Antonio, Soledad, San Luis
- Obispo and work you way up hwy 1 from there to San Simeon
-
- there is another thought, take hwy 101 to Paso Robles and turn east on
- 149? to pick up 33 (you'll pass the James Daen Memorial, if you're
- interested and some nice wineries - Arcero<sp> (racing family has one
- along this route) then turn south on 33 and pass through some very
- interesting towns and into the Ojai valley (where they filmed 'Lost
- Horizons') and on into Solvang (Dutch city with windmills) and Santa Barbara
