-
- Post Ranch is just across Hwy 1 from Ventana. Its sign is easy to
- miss, so watch for Ventana's. We had a marvelous meal there a couple
- of weeks ago; over $100 for two, but worth it. Food at Post Ranch is
- several notches above Ventana's. Both are hotels as well as
- restaurants and quite expensive--$250+. Post Ranch is on the ocean
- side of the hwy and rooms are little separate buildings tucked into
- the hillside. Ventana is higher up the hill and seems to be a little
- more formal (men often wear jackets at dinner).
-
- In Monterey, the best expensive restaurant has got to be Fresh Cream.
- Everything on the menu is special. Go for the lamb or duck (or the
- fish or the ......).
-
- Carmel's Rio Grill is worth a stop for the food (in the Crossroads
- Shopping Center). Sort of California Southwest, with interesting
- things like rabbit. Service can be farcical; on our last visit we got
- the wrong wine, a 20-minute wait between courses, an item we didn't
- order (it appeared on the bill, though), and TWO changes of waitress
- during the meal.
-
- The Sandpiper Inn is a charming b&b in Carmel; ask for an ocean view
- room. Breakfast is quite good, and the garden is lovely.
-
- Carmel Valley has several excellent hotel/resorts. We liked Carmel
- Valley Ranch Resort the best, even though we don't play golf or
- tennis. Quail Lodge has a top-notch, expensive restaurant called the
- Covey. You might still get a special winter rate in early April.
- It's worth asking, anyway.
