- | out the unwanted elements.
-
- Why should they bother? Take a look at the Licence Fee Schedule some
- time, and see who pays the biggest bikkies (and therefore gets the most
- attention). For example, yuppie-phone base stations pay $750,000 per
- MHz of spectrum; so where do YOU think RI's are going to spend their
- time? CB'ers (and regretfully, Amateurs too) have an inflated opinion
- of themselves, where DoTC is concerned.
-
-
- | As for the cost of equipment, a baycom modem
- | including software can be purchased for only $125. If the cb packet band was on
- | VHF, then modified handhelds costing as little as $299 could be used. Total
- | equipment cost of between $425 and $500 would, I think, be acceptable.
-
- So how much would you spend on telephone calls to a local BBS? And what
- do you do if your radio wears out (they do, with all that Tx/Rx switching)?
- What about an antenna? A good power supply? And GOOD coax (none of this
- RG-58 CB-type rubbish)? And where the hell are you going to find a CB VHF
- packet band? Amateur 2m? Forget it; it's full up...
-
- | Despite the obvious difficulties from time to time with the cb band
- | (voice) it has proved popular and its existence justified especially
- | its emergency uses from time to time.
-
- Sir, I think it's time you realised that you don't have a clue what you
- are talking about. Stick with CB; they're full of your type.
-
- Oh, I keep hearing rumours that CREST is dying out fast; it seems that
- those with yuppie-phones are more able to report MVA's etc than your
- average CB'er. What was that about emergency use again?
