- There are a couple of other good songs based on this...
-
- "And the band played Waltzing Matilda" by Eric Bogle, recorded by The
- Pogues (Rum Sodomy & The Lash I think..) among others, is a blackly
- comic account of the Battle of Gallipoli, from the viewpoint of an
- Aussie soldier.
-
- "Tom Trauberts Blues (Three Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen)" by Tom
- Waits, from the album Small Change. This has recently been covered by
- Rod Stewart. Check out the original though (coz TW is one of my heroes).
-
- Anyway, here's a bit of what I can remember of the Aussie original...
-
- Once a jolly swagman sat by a billabong,
- Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
- and he sang while he sat and he waited til his billy boiled,
- Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me.
-
- Swagman = thief/tramp/hobo/bum (depending on which version of English
- you speak)
- Billabong = a small lake
- billy = kettle
-
- I can't remember the rest of the song exactly, but I seem to recall
- that this particular swagman had stolen a couple of sheep, and was
- chased by a couple of members of the local constabulary, who he may or
- may not have shot. He ended up jumping in the billabong shouting
- "You'll never take me alive".
-
- I suspect that his ghost is probably still singing "Who'll go
- a-waltzing Matilda with me" as he wheels his wheelbarrow down streets
- broad and narrow.... oh damn, that's a different song altogether ;-) .
-
- Cheers,
