  20.           THE BYRON SHIRE TELECOTTAGE NETWORK

  23.               Wednesday 27th January, 1993

  26. Tomorrow the Federal Member for Richmond, Neville Newell, will
  27. present a cheque for $60,000 to kickstart the Byron Shire
  28. Telecottage Network. The funding has been provided by the
  29. Department of Education, Employment and Training (DEET) through
  30. the Greening Australia brokerage.
  31.  
  32. Under the Jobskills Training Program the BSTN will be offering ten
  33. traineeships in Landcare Information Technology as well as
  34. providing work experience for the duration of the six month
  35. course.
  36.  
  37. The objective of the program is to improve the long term
  38. employment prospects of people who have been unemployed for 12
  39. months or more by broadening their employment experience and
  40. equipping them with new skills through work experience and
  41. training.
  42.  
  43. The BSTN is a non-profit community association which aims to
  44. provide increased opportunities to the shire through the use of
  45. computer and telecommunications technology.
  46.  
  47. The BSTN,  located at 33 Fletcher Street, Byron Bay,  is now open
  48. to the public.
  49.  
  50. Its primary activities are:
  51.     *    computer services
  52.     *    laserprinting
  53.     *    scanning
  54.     *    training courses
  55.     *    networking
  56.     *    consultancy; and
  57.     *    education
  58.  
  59. The BSTN would like to thank Mark Jackson (Regional Organiser,
  60. Greening Australia), the Byron Shire Council, CES, Telecom
  61. Australia, Osborne Computers, Pegasus Networks, Cognos, the
  62. Community Centre, Byron Bay High School, local business and
