- THE BYRON SHIRE TELECOTTAGE NETWORK

- Wednesday 27th January, 1993

- Tomorrow the Federal Member for Richmond, Neville Newell, will
- present a cheque for $60,000 to kickstart the Byron Shire
- Telecottage Network. The funding has been provided by the
- Department of Education, Employment and Training (DEET) through
- the Greening Australia brokerage.

- Under the Jobskills Training Program the BSTN will be offering ten
- traineeships in Landcare Information Technology as well as
- providing work experience for the duration of the six month
- course.

- The objective of the program is to improve the long term
- employment prospects of people who have been unemployed for 12
- months or more by broadening their employment experience and
- equipping them with new skills through work experience and
- training.

- The BSTN is a non-profit community association which aims to
- provide increased opportunities to the shire through the use of
- computer and telecommunications technology.

- The BSTN, located at 33 Fletcher Street, Byron Bay, is now open
- to the public.

- Its primary activities are:
- * computer services
- * laserprinting
- * scanning
- * training courses
- * networking
- * consultancy; and
- * education

- The BSTN would like to thank Mark Jackson (Regional Organiser,
- Greening Australia), the Byron Shire Council, CES, Telecom
- Australia, Osborne Computers, Pegasus Networks, Cognos, the
- Community Centre, Byron Bay High School, local business and
- community groups for their support.
