I seem to be having a problem with my NetComm SmartModem 1234E. The
problem is that the Carrier Detect LED is, seemingly, always on. This is
including when the modem is not connected to the phone system or the
computer. Fortunately, this hasn't prevented me using the modem, as yet,
but it has created problems when trying to hang up the modem. No doubt
it could also cause problems trying to connect to another busy modem.

Could someone please give me some advice on what to do, or a possible
fix? I read the
manual, and it wasn't much help. Some data follows:

Modem: NetComm SmartModem 1234E
Computer: 286, running Telix v3.15 thru Com:1
Problem: Carrier Detect LED always on ( carrier always being "detected")
