- MEDIA RELEASE
-
- Penny farthing riders from throughout Australia and the world will again
- converge on Evandale to indulge their passion for high wheeled cycling in
- the National Penny Farthing Championships. The event is the feature of
- the eleventh Evandale Village Fair, to be held in the streets of Evandale
- on 20th February, 1993.
-
- Conventional traffic will give way to penny farthing bicycles, creating a
- carnival atmosphere against the backdrop of Evandale's historic
- streetscapes.
-
- A variety of penny farthing races will be held throughout the day,
- culminating in the main event, the National Championships, which will this
- year be sponsored by the Devon Hills Park Estate. The current champion,
- Doug Pinkerton of Birming- ham, U.K., has indicated that he will not be
- defending his title this year, leaving the championship wide open.
- Several new riders will be attending as part of the strong New South Wales
- contingent, but they will be challenged by the local Evan- dale team who
- have been in training for the event.
-
- For the first time in the history of Penny Farthing races at Evandale we
- will have amongst the competitors three generations of the one family.
- Paul Danellutti, aged 16, will compete in the junior championship; Paul's
- father, Agostino (commonly known as Ferrari) will ride in the open
- competition; and grandfather Roger, aged 72, will be attending for the
- first time to take part in the veterans.
-
- Three penny farthing enthusiasts will travel from America. Regular
- visitors Nolan Bay and Jack Castor will this year be joined by Bob
- Balcomb, the 1993 Com- mander of The Wheelman, an America wide cycling
- organisation with thousands of members dedicated to the preservation of
- bicycle history.
