- The composer was Jan (or Jean) Sibelius (1865-1957), THE Finnish nationalist
- composer (who could not speak Finnish, by the way). He is probably most
- famous for his tone poem, "Finlandia" dating from 1899. He wrote seven
- very fine symphonies, one of the great violin concertos, and a lot of
- other stuff, too (there are five pages of recordings of his music listed in
- the current Schwann Opus catalog.)
-
- "The Return of Lemminkainen" (or, "Lemminkainen's Homeward Journey",
- depending on the translation) is one of four tone poems from "The Legends
- of the Kalevala" (the Finnish legend so strikingly retold in the epic, "The
- Day the Earth Froze.") The other three Legends are: "Lemminkainen and the
- Maidens of Saari", "The Swan of Tuonela" (remember the the dead bird?), and "
- Lemminkainen in Tuonela" (a nice place to vacation, I guess.)
