- I would use the laminating resin as your glue. I would also sand a
- large area of the deck on either side of the breakage down almost to
- the foam. This will make your patch about 6 inches wide and feather
- the layers out towards the edges of the patch. This type of patch is
- known as a scarf joint. This method is commonly used in repairs of
- composite structures. I would also recommend using the lightest
- weight cloth you can find and building up multiple layers vs. 1-2 layers
- of heavier cloth. The extra layers of cloth will help to arrest any
- future cracks. By using many thin layers, you can get more glass for
- the same thickness. The heavier cloth tends to hold more resin per thickness
- than the thinner stuff. I would also, if possible, put some off axis
- (turn the cloth 45 degrees) layers on at the rails this also will prevent
- crack growth. This tends to waste glass, as you need to cut 45 degree
- strips for this. I have used remnants from stuff built at work so glass
- costs haven't been a problem for me.
-
- On another note, I used some surgical gloves (from my mom, she's a nurse)
- during my last patch job. They worked great, I could pick up the glass
- and place it where I wanted without worrying about getting resin on
- my skin (and removing it with acetone!!!) When done, I just peeled them
- off inside out and kept the toxic slime inside.
