- A year ago my mother (73) was diagnosed as having chronic
- lymphocytic leukaemia. The standard treatment has not been
- successful in controlling the condition and she has become
- increasingly sickly. Recently it was suggested that she start
- treatment with a new experimental drug. She has agreed. ("I have
- nothing to loose.")
-
- The drug is Fludarabine. Not surprisingly, there are possible side
- effects including nausea, vomiting, rashes, greater susceptibility
- to infections and, in some cases, damage to vision or hearing. It
- is normal to administer it in conjunction with an oral antibiotic
- and Allopurinol. The latter is prescribed for kidney problems;
- whether as a consequence of the illness or the drug I don't know.
-
- I gather that so far it has been given to about 2000 people in the
- US and about 20 in the UK with promising results. Has anyone on
- the net had any experience of Fludarabine? If so I would be
- interested to hear your comments.
