-
- At the old Dragon Questors' table, Lancos and Kadrys were trading puns.
- 'Raelf stopped in mid-swig. He had momentarily glanced over at the table
- where Father Lucas sat in mid-humiliating-protracted-conversational-pause
- with Saphhire - the blue-skinned woman seemed dazed or paralyzed with
- horror or maybe just stunned - and the blond man had felt a brief sense of
- sympathy for Luke, clearly not a comfortable conversationalist, and then
- the priest had looked up, and their eyes met for a split second.
-
- 'Raelf felt a momentary discomfort and wondered why he had a sudden
- aversion for the fellow.
-
- Mary returned to work, bemused by the image of the Black Drag On Inn.
- Serene had come down, briefly, to help with the late afternoon crowd,
- pushing aside Mary's concerned admonition with a promise to stop as soon
- as the crowd passed.
-
- Then, at the next table, Serene discovered that her old friend Krupp
- couldn't hold his liquor any more. Father Lucas, stirred from his profound
- disappointment with the universe to mere apathy, turned his chair around
- and in a deadpan voice, asked Krupp precisely the WRONG question:
-
- "Excuse me, sir," Lucas asked matter-of-factly. "But are you aware of the
- fact that you are dead...?"
-
- Ar'Elya, for the first time, noticed the little priest. He nudged 'Raelf
- in the side and pointed. <<Rafe! Ick! You know what that guy is?>>
-
- <<What, the Hobbit ghost?>>
-
- <<No, the one talking. Read the archetypes.>>
-
- <<Oh. Geez. You better not talk to it, Ray.>>
-
- <<I know. He'll destroy that ghost if he talks to it.>>
-
- A moment's hesitation: 'Raelf started to get up, but then the Hobbit ghost
- stood up and approached Kadrys. Lucas looked even more depressed, and
- 'Raelf sighed in relief. He signed a brief sentence towards Luke, knowing
- that he'd understand it if he cared enough to think about it:
-
- "Thanks for not draining the little guy. Have a drink on me?"
-
- Then he returned his attention to the Hobbit.
