  21. Barnabus was surprised that Dahvyn gave control of the meeting away to
  22. someone who obviously had drow blood in his veins.  Then he thought 'oh,
  23. how smart you are.  Let Cranach tell us what he can see in the writings
  24. and we can tell if he is trustworthy or not.'  Barnabus turned to Cranach
  25. and watched him carefully for any body language that might give away any
  26. deceit.  Mr. Briggs didn't know his traveling partners well yet and wanted
  27. to make sure there were no back stabbers among them, but didn't want to raise
  28. suspicion of himself while doing it.  'Yes let the others talk, and I'll
  29. learn.' he thought.

  31. >    Cranach's eyes narrowed briefly as he stared at the cryptic runes.

  33. Briggs watch a the evidence of internal battle cross Cranachs face
  34. as he scanned the writing.  His face twisted with a bitter smile and then
  35. faded into a mask of no emotion. 'This guy is on the edge' he thought
  36. 'Better be careful not to cross that him'.
  37.  
  38. Cranach began to chant in a strange fashion the following
  39.  
  40. >"    The translation is as follows":

  43. >    Each more sharp than the portal keepers,
  44. >    Each item, neither solid nor ethereal
  45. >    will be mastered only once, and provide
  46. >    the doom of the upper -world, if 
  47. >    wielded individually"

  49. >    " Beware the door keepers, whom the
  50. >    Fire lizard avoids; beware their 
  51. >    unearthly ways, for these are folk
  52. >    who know no customs neither dark
  53. >    nor light ......"

  55. Briggs never stopped watching Cranach as he chanted the verse and witness
  56. a second internal battle.  His eyes softened a bit as if something inside
  57. him had been settled, then his eyes harded again.  His black eyes cold and
  58. and unreadable.

  60. >    " The rest of the runes", he said in a cold whisper,
  61. >    "refer simply to the manner in which we will all be
  62. >    sent to the netherhells, should we fail passing the
  63. >    door-keepers "

  65. 'Yea, I bet it does.  Your keeping something back.' Briggs thought
  66.  
  67. Cranach pulled the hood up to hide his face.  Unfortunately he still wasn't
  68. use to a halfling down below looking up and Briggs saw his scowl replaced
  69. with a dark smile.

  71. Mr. Briggs sat forward "Oh dear, that sounds quite dreadful.  I hope
  72. you all aren't too scared by all that."  He turned to the dwarf who was
  73. now paying attention to the group "Um... do you have anything to add, or are
  74. we ready to discuss fees and rewards.  I'd like to get underway tomorrow.
  75. The winter snow will be falling soon, and I don't want to be caught in the
  76. Troll mountains in the time of the season."
