- Thomas Aquinas, a most influential Roman Catholic theologian and
- philosopher come up with the First Cause Argument also known as the
- Cosmological Argument. In it he stated several arguments that he believed
- makes it clear that God does exist. Let's study his argument for a minute:
- 1. Everything thtat exists had a cause of its coming into existence
- 2. Nothing can be the cause of itself
- 3. There cannot be an infinate series of causal chains
- 4. Therefore, there most be a first cause
- 5. The First Cause must be God
- -----------------------]
- 6. Therefore, God exists.
-
- If we brake Aquinas's argument into Layman's terms, here would be an
- example:
- You exist because your parents gave birth to you. Your parents exist
- because their parents gave birth to them. You grandparents exist because
- their parents gave birth to them, ect, ect. If there was no First Cause,
- we would have an infinitive chain extending back into time with no
- beginning. Aquinas doesn't think that's plausible. He believes that there
- had to be a beginning, and he names that beginning as God. My question is,
- why does it have to be God that began it all?
- Earth is possitioned just right for it to substain life. Not too close,
- not too far away from the sun. The atmoshphere is a collection of gases.
- What if the gases around the earth's ring combusted, forming chemical
- reactions. Scientists know how water is formed: Hydrogen and Oxygen.
- Perhaps these elements were already in the atmospher. Perhaps the
- temperature was just right to form the chemical reaction that causes water.
- Water is the back bone of life.
- Now we need a First Cause. If it is so easy to believe that there is a
- God, isn't even easier to believe that in the pools of water that have
- fallen from the atmospher to have been a single cell. A single cell that
- multipled and broke off, such as so that there are now two cells. Now
- these two cells multiple and branch off, so there are four, ect. ect.
- Thousands of years pass, with cells multipling and branching off. Then
- Darwism's theory of Nature Selection comes into play.
- Perhaps you have doubts that a single cell could cause all the beauty that
- you see around you. Remember that it only takes nine months to form the
- most complex being of them all: the human being. I personally believe
- that the single cell argument, as I call it, is easy to believe then
- believing that God put us here on earth.
- God is defined as an all knowing, all powerful, all good higher being. If
- there is a God, what happened to the all good part. Tell me what is good
- about murder, rape, child molesting, even robbery. I believe that there
- are some evils that need to exist. If there was no sadness, then there
- would be no joy. If there was no hate, there could be no love. But what
- is the point to the evil that man had been doing such as murder. Do we
- benefit from that death? How does the rape of some women on the other side
- of the country benefit me other than scaring the shit out of me and forcing
- me to carry mace iwth me at all times in the event that if I am attacked, I
- will have the chance to get away. I should not have to fear for my
- sanctuary in the first place.
- I don't want to knock God's existence. I would like to be a believer.
- Someone out there convience me that he's out there and that he does exist.
