  42. Mike, this satire fails for two reasons. First, it isn't funny, and
  43. second there is no real analogy to be drawn between the situation that
  44. gays face in a working environment dominated by heterosexuals and the
  45. situation that black men face in an environment dominated by white
  46. men.

  48. The real questions are sexual ones, and the analogy the original poster
  49. drew between women and gays was a fair one. We all know about the
  50. issues surrounding racial discrimination, and about the issues
  51. surrounding sexual discrimination, but they are not quite the same.

  53. The question of showers (so often raised these last few days) is not a
  54. joking one. It is not a misunderstanding of a homosexual to believe
  55. that he/she may be aroused by showering with others of the same sex
  56. any more than it is a misunderstanding to believe that heterosexual
  57. men or women may be aroused by showering with people of the opposite
  58. sex. It is the feeling of discomfort (call it "shame" or "modesty" or
  59. what you will) and self-consciousness that arises from nakedness with
  60. those who are sexually attracted to a person that is at issue here.

  62. If you think about the logical extensions of that discomfort into
  63. various interactions in the military you might very well conclude that
  64. avowed homosexuals in the military would, in fact,  interfere with
  65. the ability of the organization to perform its job. You might conclude
  66. that such a situation would not be detrimental, but you should do so
  67. only after thinking about the real issues involved. Not all
  68. discrimination is the same.

  70. Please don't forget that the government is in the business of
  71. discriminating, and rightly so. It is the job of the government to
  72. decide who can drink, who can vote, whom one can marry, what is
  73. pornography and what is art, etc.

  75. Obviously there are issues surrounding gays in the military that are
  76. worth considering seriously. It is a grave disservice to the issue and
  77. the rights of all involved to mindlessly ridicule the debate.
