  13. Thank you all for your responses to my posts of last week ("My Daughter Needs
  14. to Be More Assertive...").  I'd especially like to thank the several teens who
  15. took the time to write me some very thoughtful e-mail replies.

  17. Of course, not everything you all said was quite what I wanted to hear, but
  18. then again, if I wanted just my *own* perspective, I could have sat here &
  19. talked to myself.  :-)

  21. I did have a discussion with my daughter along the lines of "I hope you know
  22. that you don't HAVE to go to college next year, or even at all, if that is your
  23. choice.  I guess I always assumed you knew that, but I guess I never really
  24. said it, so I want to say it now."  That was a direct result of many of your
  25. suggestions, for which I thank you.

  27. Tomorrow she is giving a speech at the National Honor Society inductions at her
  28. school.  Her peers selected her as the person they most wanted to hear speaking
  29. on the topic of "service to community".  I really AM proud of her.  It is a
  30. learning experience for ME, too (being a Mom, that is).  I feel that the
  31. discussion I have gotten from this newsgroup is helping me to appreciate her
  32. and her good qualities for who SHE is, even if that is someone very different
  33. from who *I* would choose to be. Sometimes that is very difficult -- especially
  34. when it comes very close to the core of one's central values.
