- The above interpretation falls in-line with a similar one I've discussed
- before. The oak/maple rivalry could be compared to the formation of labor
- unions back in the earlier part of this century. The oaks represent the
- big-buisness bosses that forced the workers into unfair conditions (i.e. the
- absence of light represents the long hours of work, low wages, and no voice in
- the running of the buisness). Finally, the maples (the workers in the factories)
- form unions and demand to be treated to the same benefits as the upper
- managment (e.g. shorter work weeks, increased wages, etc.). The government
- eventually passed laws to protect these employees of these unions, but
- nevertheless, the union solution is far from perfect as is evidenced by the
- troubles that exist between management and labor unions today. The hatchet,
- axe, and saw line could refer to the way that the union bosses and the
- managment bosses get together to from a labor contract in an advesarial manner.
-
- In my opinion, the above interpretation and the issue of racism seem to be the
- most plausible "explainations" for the song.
