- I n response to prior calculations and questions by Jim Butler I respond.
-
- Jim
-
- lets look at it this way.
-
- Class Nitro fuel dragster.
-
- Tires Good Year GDY-1824
- size 36.0 inches tall, 17 inches wide and 16 inch rims
- maximum growth 38 inches.
-
- Engine
- Blown Hemi 500 cubic inches on Nitro
- Capable of 10,000 rpms
-
- Quarter mile 4.5 sec at 300 mph.
-
- Initial assumption axle ratio is 2.73.
-
- Calculation
- 38 inch tire height times pi equals
- 119.32 inch circumference time divided by 12
- 9.94 feet per axle revolution divided by 2.73 (axle ratio)
- 3.6422 feet per engine revolution times 10,000
- 36,422.46 feet per minute times 60
- 2,185,348 feet per hour divided by 5280
- yeids 413.89 miles per hour.
-
- Now if we substitute a 3.08 axle we get 366.85 miles per hour
- 3.23 axle 349.82 miles per hour
- 3.55 axle 318.29 miles per hour
- 3.73 axle 302.93 miles per hour
- 3.90 axle 289.72
- 4.11 274.92
- 4.33 260.95
- 4.56 247.48
- 4.88 245.90
- 5.13 233.90
- 5.38 223.05
- 5.57 215.44
- 5.86 204.78
- 6.14 195.44
- That covers all ratios available for GM 12 bolt carriers.
-
- As a fact I know that most not all dragster tend to run rear axles
- in the mid three range with an even greater selection of ratios
- from quick change rear axles.
-
- Also keep in mind tire size may reduce to Good Year 34 inch tires
- which would reduce all the top speeds by about 94 percent
- to even 90 percent depending on the tire expansion. I used
- the largest dragster tire available at about $250.00 each,
- plus inner tube and special rims costing about as much as
- the tire. Please note the life expentacy on these tires
- is 3 to 5 runs down the 1/4 mile. This plus fuel cost makes
- these expensive machines even when you can get 12 runs off an
- engine.
-
- dennis
- Now take these figures and see what you come up with.
