- The other week I pinged the group about Mike Stern.
- I discovered that he has (at least) 5 albums out.
-
- One netter gave Stern high reccomendations. So I
- picked up his 1991 release, "Odds or Evens." I went
- with this one over his latest, "Standards," as I
- figured "Standards" could just be a bunch of jazz covers
- and the netter said that Stern's originals were great -
- OoE would contain more originals.
-
- It's an impressive album. All instrumental, most songs
- are 6 or 7 minutes in length, talented horns, light on
- keyboards - really tasteful guitar.
-
- Now I figure most of the Fusion stuff we get is a lot more
- Rock than Jazz: Steve Morse, Jeff Beck, Gary Moore (Colosseum
- II). This Stern album is clearly more on the Jazz side of
- Fusion; along with older Mahavishnu Orchestra and Al DiMeola.
-
- <as an aside: I recently scoured used record shops for the
- early Mahavishnu Orchestra albums. after hearing "Birds of
- Fire," it became clear to me where Beck ripped off most of
- his Fusion ideas. I see that Beck has a new release - any
- one know what this Frankies House Soundtrack is?>
-
- It's a little mellower than, say, Morse's latest, "Coast to
- Coast," but it really shows off Stern's stuff.
-
- I know that I will pick up on some of his other stuff.
