  17. Well, what Steve Wyrick said is correct; harmonics _are_ a _little_ bit off,
  18. because harmonics are perfect fourths and fifths, and they don't _exactly_
  19. match the equal-temperament scale, but the difference is neglible.  (Yes,
  20. the 12th fret harmonic _is_ equal to the 12th fret.)

  22. The harmonic at the 5th fret of the low E string is the same as the harmonic
  23.   at the 7th fret of the A string.
  24. The harmonic at the 5th fret of the A string is the same as the harmonic
  25.   at the 7th fret of the D string.
  26. The harmonic at the 5th fret of the D string is the same as the harmonic
  27.   at the 7th fret of the G string.
  28. The harmonic at the 5th fret of the B string is the same as the harmonic
  29.   at the 7th fret of the high E string.

  31. To tune these strings, just sound two "equal" harmonics at the same time.
  32. if they don't match, adjust one of the strings.  Harmonics also work well
  33. with tuning forks.

  35. To bridge the gap between the 4 low strings and the 2 high strings, I do a
  36. 7th fret harmonic on the G string and then pluck a note at the 10th fret on
  37. the high E.

  39. If two harmonics that _should_ be the same are off, you will hear little
  40. pulses ("beats") that get faster as you're more out of tune.  One advantage
  41. of using harmonics to tune is that your left hand is free to adjust the
  42. tuning pegs _while_ the strings are sounding.

  44. DO NOT use the 4th fret or 9th fret harmonics to tune.  Hopefully the people
  45. who claim they tune their guitars this way mean that they're doing an
  46. artificial harmonic while holding down the 4th fret.  If they mean that
  47. they're actually using the 4th fret harmonic, they're tone deaf.
