- For learning about old guitar amps and how to identify them, it's
- hard to beat _The Tube Amp Book_ of GT fame. However, for any sort of
- technical or design issues you need a real book. I have managed to
- snarf a few old EE textbooks from the 30's thru the 60's (when those
- nast bits o' silicon took over). Some of these books were given to me
- by a professor who had helped me with some tube stuff and knew I was
- interested. The others I picked up at various places which sell old
- unwanted books. Book collectors aren't interested in technical/text
- books, so they're generally cheap if you can find them. If you live in
- a college town, try nearby flea markets, garage sales (especially those
- of retired professors), the Salvation Army, library sales, etc. For
- specific books, I recommend:
-
- _Radio Engineering_, Frederick E. Terman, McGraw-Hill, various
- printings from the 30's and 40's. This is an excellent text book
- with many examples and detailed analysis of tube operation.
-
- _Communication Engineering_, William L. Everitt, McGraw-Hill, various
- printings from the 30's and 40's. Another very good text. Not as
- much detail about tube amplification or operation, but enough if you're
- in a pinch (i.e. can't find anything else).
-
- _Analysis and Design of Electronic Circuits_, Paul M. Chirlian,
- McGraw-Hill, 1965. A later book which includes transistor theory.
- There are many good examples and analysis sections. If you've had
- courses on transistor operation, this book might be the best for you.
- It makes it easy to compare and contrast tube and transistor curves
- and equivalent circuits (for modelling in Spice, perhaps? Anybody
- got a model file for a 12AX7...).
-
- Well, good luck finding something. I forgot to mention that if your
- local college library refuses to sell you the book you want, try checking
- it out :-)
