- Hello once again...
-
- The Guide!, that wholly remarkable Project Galactic-Guide article reading
- system for IBM/compatible computers, has been updated... again! Yes,
- another upgrade in the continuing history of TG! for DOS -- ver 1.10!
-
- ***** I M P O R T A N T N O T E *****
-
- PKWare released the *official* update of PK-ZIP version 2.04c in Dec '92.
- I shall be using this new release in all further updates of TG! (but *not*
- with this release). The new PK-ZIP version features an improved compression
- technique (deflation) and is much more efficient via 386/486 32-bit
- instructions, EMS/XMS memory usage, etc.
-
- This update of TG!, stored as TG110.ZIP, was created using the *old* version
- of PK-ZIP (version 1.1) to remain compatable with the entire spectrum of
- PC systems. However, in the months to come, the new PK-ZIP version 2.04c
- will spread (it's legal to copy shareware programs with the assumption that
- you're going to register them!), and I feel it's time to move forward.
-
- Hence, unless I get flooded with mail complaining of the move, the NEXT
- release will be using the *new* version of PK-ZIP. One more time: this
- update, TG110.ZIP, uses the *old* version. (I put 'pkz204c.exe' in the
- /pub/galactic-guide/theguide directory; see the FTP info, below.)

-
- Version 1.10, 01/26/93
-
- * Rewrote the Print and Save-to-Disk routines; they're much faster and
- require less code (thus consume less memory, leaving more room for
- articles, etc). In addition, the print routine automatically
- detects if the article is too wide to fit in 80-columns and enables
- the Compressed Print toggle (which you can then over-ride if, for
- example, you're printing on green bar wide paper, etc).
-
- * I'm now using the 80286 Instruction set, since the program does not
- want to run on the original IBM XT line anyway. Once I finally
- nail down exactly what's going on (ie, get the thing to work on
- the XT's again), then I'll un-do this switch.
-
- * Finally, I want to acknowledge some problems with the Cross-Reference
- engine (when a new article is added which references an old one,
- the old one should have a xref back to the new one -- this doesn't
- always work right).
-
- This inconvience will be fixed in the next release of TG!; a blast
- of inspiration hit me whilst I shoveled the driveway last week, and
- it was revealed onto me a new, more efficient way to do this whole
- GuideNET thing anyway, so TG! ver 1.20 will pretty much be a
- revamped overhaul of the memory stuff. Watch for TG120.ZIP soon!
-
- * Lastly, in addition to the xref fix, the second-to-next TG! for DOS
- release will have a built-in fully-functional article editor,
- complete and very nifty, as per the recent discussions on
- alt.galactic-guide. Watch for TG130.ZIP soon, but not as soon
- as TG120.ZIP...
-
- * In conclusion, TGW! (The Guide for Windows!) is crawling along; the
- pre-alpha initial release has been moved back to Feb sometime
- (its starting to sound like infamous Vaporware, huh?)...
-
- *************************************************************************
-
- Until we update again,
-
- Share and Enjoy,
-
- Steve

- INFO ON "THE" FTP SITE --
-
- Here's the specs on getting Project Galactic-Guide materials, including:
-
- o the alt.galactic-guide FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) info file
- o article archive collections (the *.NEW files)
- o The Guide! (TG!), for IBM/DOS machines
- o The Unix Guide (TUG), for Unix systems
- o The Atari Guide (TAG), for Atari ST systems
- o AmiGuide, for Amiga systems
- o Hitch-hiker's Guide fan club stuff (like the two THHG/Star Trek cross-
- over scripts, plus gif images and other fun stuff)
-
- From your favorite ultrix or vax/vms system (assuming you're on-line, etc):
-
-
- 1) Connect to Oakland University's Vela system:
-
- Lexical: [ ftp vela.acs.oakland.edu ]
- Numeric: [ ftp 141.210.10.2 ]
-
- (you only need to use one of these methods; some people can't use
- the lexical address, and need the numeric ID instead...)
-
-
- 2) If you can't connect, then email me your email address and what you want,
- and I'll send it to you (ie, the uuencoded versions of the program
- files, and/or the article archive files, etc).
-
- else login to the system:
-
- Syntax: [ login anonymous ]
-
- and then use your email addr for passwd.
-
-
- 3) Go to the desired directory:
-
- Syntax: [ cd directory ]
-
- The following directories are available:
-
- /pub/galactic-guide
-
- The root directory contains the general, alt.galactic-guide files
- (like the alt.g-g FAQ list, the article archive *.NEW files, etc).
- This is the place to look for the latest and greatest in articles
- and other important Project Galactic-Guide stuff.
-
- Currently, two complete article archive files exist, each containing
- 25 articles:
-
- 19920705.NEW
- 19921202.NEW
-
- In addition, the file 'WORKING.NEW' contains the very latest in
- PGG articles.
-
- /pub/galactic-guide/theguide
-
- This sub-directory contains The Guide!-specific files (this is the
- article reader system for DOS-based systems, like IBM's and
- compatibles). In this directory, you'll find the .ZIP file, the
- uuencoded version of the .ZIP file, icons for use with OS/2, and
- other support and dox files. Watch for TGW! (The Guide for Windows!)
- coming in mid-Spring '93!
-
- /pub/galactic-guide/tug
-
- This is the sub-directory containing The Unix Guide (TUG), code,
- dox, and support information. A new pre-alpha release of TUG
- (version 2.0) will be available in the Spring of '93. In the
- meanwhile, TUG 1.0 *is* on the FTP here.
-
- /pub/galactic-guide/stguide
-
- This contains the newest Project Galactic-Guide system, The Atari
- Guide (TAG). The files here are 'stguide.lzh' (the binary archive
- file containing the programs and documentation) and 'stguide.lzh.UU'
- (the ASCII uuencoded version of STGUIDE.LZH).
-
- /pub/galactic-guide/amiguide
-
- This is where you'll find article-reader programs for the Amiga
- computer systems. Currently, we have AmiGuide, a recent addition
- to Project Galactic-Guide. Both the .LHA archive and the
- uuencoded version of the .LHA file are available here.
-
- /pub/galactic-guide/fan
-
- Here's where you'll find all the general Hitch-hiker's Guide fan
- stuff. In here is the "complete" index of almost every topic in
- the first four books (called INDEX.HHG), the two THHG/Star Trek
- cross-over scripts, gif pictures, and more! Again, I'll keep
- adding to this as I discover more cool files, gifs, lists, etc.
- (Anybody out there have anything else to add to the "library"?)
-
-
- Once you're in the desired directory, display a file listing:
-
- Syntax: [ dir ]
-
-
- 4) Be sure you're in binary mode: a lot of folks have been writing and
- complaining of corrupt .ZIP files, etc... it's because they're
- trying to get the binary file in ASCII mode (which is the default).
- You only need to type this once, but you MUST type this EVERY TIME
- you login to the system.
-
- Syntax: [ binary ]
-
- ALWAYS TYPE [ binary ] BEFORE YOU [ get ... ] ANYTHING!!!
-
-
- 5) Get the file(s) you want:
-
- Syntax: [ get filename.extension(s) ]
-
- Note that you can always change into another directory (detailed
- above) and get more stuff if you want.
-
- 6) When you're satisfied, logoff the system:
-
- Syntax: [ bye ]
-
