  17. Better still the JPEG group themselves produce a free compression &
  18. decompression library with DOS and Unix support.

  20. Whilst the `lossyness' of JPEG is usually acceptable, I've
  21. occaisionally found pictures which have little green dots in them; not
  22. noticable until you look closely, but then very annoying.  Compression
  23. ratios on digitized images are very impressive; I have seen 1 meg go
  24. down to about 70k, but that's exceptional; normally, I expect about
  25. 500k to 80k or so.
